Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard Get Engaged

Kristen Bell's publicist has confirmed the U.S. actress is engaged to marry her longtime beau, actor Dax Shepard.

The film stars have been together for more than two years.

Bell's representative confirmed to UsMagazine.com exclusively the happy news of her betrothal.

A source told the magazine's Web site Shepard, 35, proposed to Bell, 29, during the holidays and the actress reportedly was wearing her new engagement ring on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards show in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Bell is best known for her portrayal of a teen private detective in the TV series "Veronica Mars." She has also starred in the movies "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "When in Rome."

Shepard's film credits include "Without a Paddle," "Zathura," "Employee of the Month" and "Baby Mama." He will soon be seen in the TV drama "Parenthood."

Kristen Bell Rising Career Takes Her To "Rome"

When she waded in to a water fountain in Rome to film a scene for her upcoming movie, Kristen Bell had little more on her mind than having fun.

Now, with "When in Rome" hitting theaters on Friday, it has dawned on the 20 year-old actress that she's carrying the success of an entire film on her shoulders for the first time, and with that comes the pressure to maintain a rising career.

"It's only now that I'm realizing that, wow, this is what people call your 'vehicle,'" the actress told Reuters.

But this 'vehicle' didn't pick up Bell without a lot of hard work ahead of it. Bell began acting in school, went to the New York stage, then moved to Hollywood where she landed the title role on television show "Veronica Mars" before starring in the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

Along the way, the petite, blonde-haired Bell, who grew up idolizing funny actresses such as Catherine O'Hara and Jennifer Coolidge, has been showcasing stage, music and comedy skills.

In "When in Rome,' she plays Beth, a single art curator who travels to Rome for her sister's wedding, and once there, she falls for the groom's best man (Josh Duhamel).

But when she plucks several coins from a fountain, she finds herself pursued by a band of unwanted suitors -- played by Will Arnett, Danny De Vito, Jon Heder and Dax Shepard -- all of whom had previously wished for love on those coins.

In real-life, Bell has dated Shepard for two years, but she keeps her private life out of the public spotlight.

Shooting "When in Rome," capped off a trio of movies in exotic locations. Bell traveled to Bora Bora for ensemble comedy "Couples Retreat" and Hawaii for Judd Apatow-produced "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

"I keep saying I've fired my agent and just hired a travel agent. I have no idea why I've had such dumb luck," said Bell. "I was not well-traveled before. I grew up in Detroit where they don't teach you to dream of traveling the world."

Growing up, Bell said she was "too small to play sports" so she joined community theater. After high school she moved to New York to study theater and landed the role of Becky Thatcher in the Broadway production of "Tom Sawyer." Other roles followed on- and off-Broadway including a "Reefer Madness" musical and "The Crucible" with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.

"There I was, five-feet tall, weighing less than a 100 lbs, eating my bagged lunch next to (playwright) Arthur Miller in a little cafeteria outside our rehearsal studio," recalls Bell. "I thought, 'How did I get here?'"

GOING HOLLYWOOD

Eventually she moved to Los Angeles and landed the title role in "Veronica Mars," a television show about a high school student who moonlights as a private investigator. It debuted in 2004 and became a critical, if not commercial, hit.

"'Veronica Mars' is what set up my whole career," said Bell. "That got me in the door for 'Sarah Marshall,' and being accepted into Judd Apatow's camp is sort of a right of passage for actors. It was very, very lucky for me."

Yet the experience on was bittersweet. On a break from "Veronica Mars" to film the comedy "Sarah Marshall," in which she portrayed an actress who dumps her boyfriend, she learned "Veronica Mars" was being canceled.

"I was shooting 'Sarah Marshall,' playing a girl whose show just got canceled," says Bell. "When we shot that scene where Sarah says, 'My show's canceled, where am I going from here?' those feeling were very real."

But unlike the fictional Sarah Marshall, Bell's career was far from stalling. She spent a season playing a young woman with extraordinary powers on hit series "Heroes," and continues to narrate the title character for TV's "Gossip Girl."

Meanwhile, her film career continues to grow. Bell is currently shooting "Burlesque" with Christina Aguilera and Cher and next stars in the comedy "You Again," opposite Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Yet her stage roots are not long forgotten. Bell is working on a musical stage version of the film "Heathers," a coming-of-age comedy about girls in a high school, with "Reefer Madness" director Andy Fickman and writer Kevin Murphy.

The group has already staged several readings in Los Angeles with the goal of mounting a production there before taking it to New York. Bell plays the role of Veronica, which in the film helped make Winona Ryder a star.

In the meantime, the multi-talented Bell gets to showcase her musical chops during the end credits of "When in Rome" when the cast breaks in to a musical dance number.

"I still love musical theater," confessed Bell. "I'm never as happy as when I'm doing that."

Kristen Bell Serious About Love

Kristen Bell says her love life takes priority over her career.

The 'Heroes' actress - who is in a relationship with actor Dax Shephard - is ambitious and wants to be successful, but not at the expense of her personal happiness.

She is quoted as saying: "I think your significant other should be way more important than your work, personally. I love working. But I don't know that I'd say I'm a workaholic because I also love maxin' and relaxin'."

Although she is committed to always making time for her love life, Kristen realises she is fortunate to have so many work offers.

She added: "I don't think I'm a workaholic but at the moment I feel like I'm at a really lovely place and I'm grateful to be where I am so I like working too, but I know what my priorities are."

ET Ratings Please Mary Hart; Kristen Bell's Home Life Secret

Mary Hart is thrilled by "Entertainment Tonight's" record-breaking run as the top-rated syndicated magazine show for 700 weeks straight -- "a big, round, beautiful number," she calls it.

The ratings, reflecting some 35 million viewers a week, also stand as a vote of confidence that's especially welcome now. The 28-year-old program has definitely faced new challenges in recent times, with the rise in "celebitchy" reporting on the Internet, as well as other TV shows. (Indeed, Nancy O'Dell's recent departure from "Access Hollywood" after 13 years reportedly has much to do with her displeasure over that show's veering into tabloid-style sensationalism.)
Hart says that she and exec producer Linda Bell Blue and the rest of the "ET" team talk about the tabloidy trend "all the time -- but it has never been anything other than 'We have to take the high road' with us," she contends. "It's really important. Stations give us that feedback all the time; they appreciate it. So do people in the industry. We do get people bent out of shape with us, of course. We cringed when Charlie Sheen got into trouble again. But we had to cover it."
Covering entertainment "is more work now," points out Hart. "We had to make that adjustment a few years back, realizing that on the Internet, stories come out instantaneously. There are so many stories that turn out to be absolutely untrue every day. We have to weed through everything that is out there and make sure we know what's accurate."
And then, of course, "Just in terms of following the news, it's a different world. When I started out, it was all about movie stars and TV stars and music stars. Today, it's a lot of reality television. You see the numbers."
This week, Hart hosted the Palm Springs International Film Festival black-tie awards gala for her seventh year -- which certainly gave her another chance to get a movie star fix. "This festival has grown so immensely," she notes. "It's really one of the biggest international festivals in North America now, with an A-plus list -- Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, Jason Reitman, Uma Thurman ... It just goes on and on."
ON THE PERSONAL SIDE: Kristen Bell, who is currently working on the movie "Burlesque," has become increasingly popular over the last few years, but she admits to preferring a much quieter existence outside of work.
"I'm a homebody by nature. When I'm not working, I rarely leave my house," says Bell, who is enjoying a nice, low-key relationship with Dax Shepard. "I'm very territorial about my private life and I think by keeping it so close to me and not compromising it, it makes me a healthier person when I'm at work."
THE VIDEOLAND VIEW: Regina King admits she was surprised by NBC's cancellation of her "Southland" cop series. "When you have so many critics applaud a show, usually that's not the case," she points out. Fortunately for her and the rest of the series' team, TNT was able to purchase 'Southland' and will begin airing the first season Tuesday (1/12). It will then be followed by six brand-new episodes. "There were a lot of interoffice things that were going on at NBC that had nothing to do with 'Southland.' We kind of just got caught up in the middle of it. When I got the call that the show was canceled, I always felt there was another place for us to go. I didn't know where it was," she recalls. "In all honesty, the first places I started thinking of were TNT and FX. They seem to want to do television that is more aggressive and not the normal, so to speak, type of TV that we're seeing all the time. They want to do narratives that push the envelope."
It seems to her the show has finally found its right fit. "One man's trash is another man's treasure. I do feel like we're in a better place now. We're at a network that understands the show more. They're actually promoting the show, unlike NBC," says King. However, TNT brass won't make a decision about shooting a second season until they see how the first season fares there. Says King, "I think we'll find out prior to the final airing of the entire 13 episodes of season one. They want to see if the audience finds us -- the ones who were already fans, as well as if more will come on board. We have a great show on our hands so I hope they do."
HE'S GOT THE LOOKS: Peter Facinelli is proud that he changes his appearance character by character -- including his ongoing role as head vampire Carlisle Cullen in the "Twilight" movies, and his part as out-there Dr. "Coop" Cooper on "Nurse Jackie." Looking back, there were "Van Ray from 'Fastlane' and Takmet from 'The Scorpion King,' Bob from 'Big Kahuna' and the 'Damages' character ...They're all very different," says the handsome 36-year-old, whose wife is Jennie Garth. "I don't like turning in the same person all the time, so I try to make sure all the characters I do are very different. So when I was able to dye my hair blond and look vastly different from myself to play Carlisle, it kind of went along with what I've been trying to do in my career."
With reports by Emily-Fortune Feimster.
